NZ Motorbike Theory Test Questions

What to expect on the NZ motorcycle learner licence theory test: question topics, LAMS rules, protective gear and hazards, plus how to practise before you book.

Riders searching for NZ motorbike theory test questions usually want to know two things: what is actually on the test, and how to practise. The motorcycle learner licence test uses the same 35-question format as the car test (32 correct to pass), but a good share of the questions are about riding specifically. Here is how to approach them.

The question topics

  • Being seen: motorcycles are small and easy to miss, so expect questions about where to position yourself in a lane and how to stay visible at intersections and around larger vehicles.
  • Protective gear: an approved helmet is a legal requirement, and questions also cover other riding gear and why it matters.
  • Road surface hazards: wet roads, gravel, painted lines, oil and similar hazards affect a bike very differently from a car.
  • Braking and cornering: using both brakes smoothly, avoiding locking a wheel, and looking where you want to go.
  • Licence conditions: learner and restricted riders are limited to LAMS-approved motorcycles (the Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme), and there are other conditions that depend on your licence stage.
  • Shared Road Code topics: signs, give-way rules, speed limits and safe following distances apply to riders too.

Example questions to think through

These are written for practice, not copied from the official test.

  • You are riding in wet weather. How should that change your following gap? Increase it, because stopping distances are longer and braking is less forgiving.
  • Do you need to wear a helmet on short trips? Yes. An approved helmet, properly fastened, is required whenever you ride.
  • Which motorcycles can a restricted licence holder ride? LAMS-approved motorcycles. Check the current NZTA list for exact models and limits.
  • A car at an intersection looks like it has seen you. What should you assume? That it may not have. Position yourself to be seen and be ready to react.

How to practise

Start with the shared Road Code topic tests, then use the riding-specific test to focus on the extra material. Finish with a 35-question mock exam to see how you do on the full format.

This article is an unofficial study guide. Licensing rules and test details can change, so confirm the current requirements for your licence with the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) or an NZTA-approved driver licensing agent before you book.
