Free NZ Road Code Practice Tests

How to get the most from free NZ Road Code practice tests: a simple plan using topic tests, explanations and 35-question mock exams to reach 32 out of 35.

Free practice tests are only useful if you use them well. Taking a test, glancing at your score and moving on teaches very little. This plan turns the free NZ Road Code practice tests into steady progress toward the 32 out of 35 you need on the real theory test.

Step 1: start with topic tests

Topic tests are short and focused, so you can see which areas you know. Begin with the essential rules, then work through road signs, driver behaviour, intersections, parking, road position and emergencies. In practice mode you see the result and the explanation straight after each answer, which is where most of the learning happens.

Step 2: treat explanations as the lesson

When you get a question wrong, read the explanation before moving on and try to say the rule in your own words. If you got it right but were unsure, read the explanation anyway. Guessing correctly does not mean you understand the rule.

Step 3: repeat the weak topics

Retake the topics where you scored lowest a few days later rather than straight away. If you score well after a gap, the rule has stuck. All the practice tests can be retaken as many times as you like.

Step 4: sit a full mock exam

A mock exam mirrors the real test: 35 questions, answers revealed only at the end, and a pass mark of 32. Sit it without interruptions and do not look anything up. Afterwards, use the results screen to review the questions you missed.

When to book the real test

A good sign is passing two or three mock exams in a row with a comfortable margin, not just scraping 32. Then book your test through an NZTA-approved driver licensing agent.

Pick your starting point
