Driving a heavy vehicle adds extra rules around load limits, stopping distances, and vehicle handling on top of the general Road Code every learner is tested on. These tests cover that shared foundation plus our dedicated heavy vehicle (Class 2) test, so you can prepare for exactly what the theory test covers before you apply for your licence.

What the NZ heavy vehicle (Class 2) tests cover

  1. Start with the Class 2 test

    Heavy Vehicles Class 2 focuses on what is different about driving a heavy vehicle, including load limits, stopping distances and vehicle handling. Take it first, then use the shared road rule tests to cover the foundation.

  2. Cover the shared road rules

    Heavy vehicle learners are tested on the general Road Code too. Exam Core and the topic tests for road signs, driver behaviour, intersections, parking, road position and emergencies all apply.

  3. Then sit the heavy vehicle mock exam

    The heavy vehicle mock exam has 35 questions, 25 general and 10 specific to heavy vehicle licences, with answers shown at the end and a pass mark of 32 out of 35.

Yes. Every heavy vehicle practice test is free, and you can retake each one as many times as you want.

Yes. The theory test covers the general Road Code as well as heavy vehicle questions, so practise the shared topic tests alongside the Class 2 test.

The theory test has 35 questions and the pass mark is 32. Our heavy vehicle mock exam follows the same format. Check the NZ Transport Agency website for the latest requirements.
